Consolidating your RRSPs
Many
of you probably have more than one RRSP account. Consolidating your
RRSP accounts can help you save money on managing your investments.
Many people receive their quarterly statements, from either
different advisors or financial institutions which show the
different funds and/or stocks you have. The problem that can arise
by having different RRSP accounts are that you may end up with the
same holdings therefore you aren’t diversifying your risk. By
consolidating your plans it also gives you a truer picture of your
investments and makes the management of your financial easier.
By
having several RRSP accounts, you end up not knowing your true asset
allocation and that can result in having inappropriate weighing
toward one type of asset or geographic area.
Some
of you may have group RRSPs which most of them give you the option
once a year to sweep you and your employer’s contributions,
transferring the funds into your main RRSP account. Although, there
are some financial incentives to keep a group RRSP open such as
reduced management fees.
If
you choose not to consolidate your RRSP accounts, providing us with
copies of the statements will provide us with the full picture of
your situation.
If
you are worried about having too much money at one firm, choosing a
