Another
year has come and gone. We hope you had a fantastic holiday season
and wish you all the best in the new year.
The
time is here to focus and plan on your financial health. How’s your
retirement plan doing? If you’re looking to maximize your
contribution but don’t have the cash, consider an RRSP loan. With
rates as low as prime minus 1%, it may be right for you. Topping up
your RRSP before the deadline of February 29, 2008 will increase
your tax refund.
If
you prefer to contribute to your RRSP on a monthly basis rather than
coming up with a lump sum at the end of the year, make market
fluctuations work in your favor with systematic investing, starting
as low as $25 per month. If you are already doing this,
congratulations! Talk to your kids, family and friends and convince
them to get started.
If
you’re running out of ideas for Christmas gifts, as many of us are,
how about a systematic RRSP contribution as a gift for your adult
children? If you were to contribute $25 per month (for a total
yearly cost of $300) and your children would match that with their
own money, they could end up with $58,803 in thirty years, assuming
a rate of return of 7%. The deposits made by yourself and your
children total $18,000, or $9000 each. That’s a small price to pay
for a nice security cushion down the road.
